Collin

Collin is a spelling of Colin, which developed in medieval French as a short form of Nicolas. Through Nicholas, that line of descent leads to Greek elements meaning “victory” and “people.” Colin also has a separate Scottish history as an English form of Cailean. The meaning attached to a family’s Collin therefore depends on which naming tradition they intend.

The doubled l changes the spelling without usually changing the English pronunciation. It also distinguishes Collin visually from Colin, although the two may still need clarification when spoken. Col is an optional short form. Families who want the Nicholas connection to be immediately visible might instead compare Nico or Nicholas itself.
