Collyns

Collyns is a modern given-name spelling of Collins. One important route for the surname is a family relationship to Colin, a familiar form of Nicholas. Through that route, the older personal-name meaning is victory of the people. Other Collins family lines have Irish surname origins, so one explanation does not cover every bearer.

Using Collyns as a first name preserves the sound of Collins while making the spelling distinctive with y. It also keeps the final s of the surname, which is part of the full form rather than a plural added to a baby’s name. A family’s own Collins history can give the choice a particularly clear meaning, especially when the name is being passed through a maternal or other ancestral line.
