Constance

Constance comes from the Latin name Constantia and the idea of steadfastness or constancy. It belongs to the tradition of virtue names, although its long history as an ordinary personal name can make the underlying word less immediately obvious than Hope or Faith.

Constance Hopkins was a passenger on the Mayflower, and Constance was the name of Oscar Wilde's wife. The related German form Constanze is associated with Mozart's wife. Connie is a familiar short form, but Constance can be used in full without requiring a nickname. Constanza and Constantia are further related forms, preserving the same broad meaning while reflecting different language traditions and endings.
