Coral

Coral is an English word name associated with marine animals and the structures they create. Reef-building corals produce hard skeletons that accumulate into reefs, while some kinds of coral have also been used in jewelry. The word additionally names a pinkish-red color, giving the name several related visual associations.

As a personal name, Coral belongs to the tradition of using gems, flowers, and other natural materials as names. Its ocean connection distinguishes it from the similar-sounding Cora and Carol, whose histories are different. Actress Coral Browne provides an established bearer of the exact name. A family might choose it for the sea, a color, or a keepsake, all within the same recognizable word history.
