Cynthia

Cynthia is a Greek name meaning a woman from Mount Kynthos on the island of Delos. It was an epithet of Artemis in mythology. The goddess gives the name a moon-related association, but “moon goddess” is a description of that connection rather than the literal translation of Cynthia.

Cindy and Cyndi are familiar short forms, while Thea offers a different family option. Cinzia is an Italian counterpart. Cynthia has appeared in English literature since the Renaissance, giving it a history beyond its later popularity as a first name. Parents may value that literary background, a relative named Cindy, or the original Greek geographical story.
