Daenerys

Daenerys is a fictional name created by George R. R. Martin for his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Daenerys Targaryen became widely known through the television adaptation, Game of Thrones. The spelling belongs to the invented naming world of the Targaryen family, and there is no established ordinary-language translation for it.

The character’s association with dragons and her complicated political journey make this a particularly specific literary choice. Khaleesi is one of her titles, rather than another spelling or meaning of Daenerys. Families considering the name may wish to distinguish affection for the sound from identification with the whole character arc. Its story is grounded in contemporary fantasy, with the fiction providing the meaning a family personally attaches to it.
