Damaris

Damaris is a Greek name recorded in the New Testament. In Acts, a woman called Damaris is among those who respond to Paul’s teaching in Athens. Her presence in that account is clear, although the brief biblical mention does not provide the detailed charitable biography sometimes attached to her in modern name descriptions.

The name is probably related to Greek damalis, a word used for a heifer or young girl. The derivation is not completely certain, so “gentle” is better treated as an interpretation than a precise translation. Spanish Dámaris marks the stressed syllable with an accent. The biblical identity gives this name a specific history without needing to embellish the woman’s life beyond the text.
