Dana

Dana has several independent histories. Persian dānā means “wise,” while other uses of Dana developed through surnames or as short forms of names such as Daniela. A Dana connected with Daniela has a different story from the Persian name, so one meaning cannot explain every bearer across languages.

The name has long been used for boys and girls in English-speaking settings. Queen Latifah, born Dana Owens, provides a familiar namesake. Pronunciation can vary with language, particularly the first vowel and the stress. Four letters make Dana concise, but its cultural background is richer than its size suggests; knowing which family or language connection matters is the key to explaining it accurately.
