Darius

Darius is a Latinized form of an ancient Persian royal name, traditionally interpreted as “possessing goodness” or “holding firm the good.” Greek and Latin transmission shaped the familiar English spelling. Several Persian kings bore the name, including Darius the Great, giving it a historical connection beyond its meaning.

Composer Darius Milhaud provides a later artistic namesake. Dario and Dariush are related forms that reflect different language traditions rather than new interpretations of the root. Families choosing Darius may hear more than one pronunciation in English, so trying the preferred version with the surname can help determine its rhythm without changing the historical name they are choosing.
