Deanna

Deanna can be understood as a form of Diana or as a feminine development of Dean. The Diana route leads to the Roman goddess and a name traditionally associated with the divine. Dean has separate surname and occupational histories, so the connection intended by a particular family affects how Deanna is explained.

Actress and singer Deanna Durbin helped make this spelling widely recognizable in the twentieth century. Her screen name is an important association, though related forms existed before her career. Deana offers a close written alternative, while Diana makes the classical relationship more explicit. Deanna may therefore honor a Dean, continue an established family name, or preserve the sound associated with the actress.
