Delaney

Delaney has an Irish surname history connected with the personal name Dubhshláine. Its elements have been interpreted in different ways, so translations such as “dark challenger” or “dark river” should be treated with care. A separate surname route connects the name with a French expression for an alder grove.

Delany is a related spelling, and Lainey can serve as an everyday short form. Musician Delaney Bramlett provides a recognizable example of the name used for a boy, while the name is also familiar for girls. Families choosing Delaney from their own surname history may be able to identify the intended route more clearly than a general name definition can.
