Demetrius

Demetrius is the Latinized form of Greek Demetrios, meaning “belonging to Demeter.” Demeter is the Greek goddess associated with grain and agriculture. That reference makes the name part of a classical tradition, rather than giving Demetrius a direct meaning such as farmer. The form also appears in literary and religious history.

Its four-syllable English rhythm gives Demetrius a more formal sound than shorter relatives such as Dimitri. Demetri can be an affectionate shortening, while Demetrio offers a different language's form for comparison. Parents who enjoy substantial names such as Sebastian or Alexander may appreciate its similarly expansive shape. It is worth trying the complete name with a surname, since the full rhythm is an important part of its appeal and identity.
