Dixie

Dixie is a name associated with the southern United States. Explanations of the regional term include French dix, meaning ten, on banknotes used in New Orleans, and a connection with the Mason–Dixon line. Neither account should be turned into a certain Latin translation such as “I have spoken” for the personal name.

The regional association also brings historical connections with the antebellum South and the Confederacy, which some families will consider when choosing it. Actress Dixie Carter is a well-known bearer, showing the name’s life beyond geography. Its history is best understood through the American regional term, with the competing origin stories clearly distinguished from the name’s later personal use.
