Dominique

Dominique is a French form of the Latin name Dominicus, meaning “belonging to the Lord.” In French it is used for both boys and girls, so it should not be described only as a feminine version of Dominic. The religious meaning comes from its Latin root, not from the gender of a particular bearer.

Basketball player Dominique Wilkins is a recognizable male namesake. The name's French ending stays the same across its traditional uses, unlike name pairs that change their final letter. Dominic is a useful comparison for the underlying family, but Dominique has its own spelling and pronunciation history. Its broader French usage is more informative than a temporary gender balance in one country's birth records.
