Donald

Donald is the familiar English form of Scottish Gaelic Domhnall, a name with a long history among Scottish rulers and families. It is commonly interpreted as “world ruler.” The related surname Macdonald preserves the same personal name within a family name, giving Donald a connection that reaches beyond its modern famous bearers.

Don, Donnie, and Donny offer different everyday forms, while Donal is a closely related Irish choice. Donald Duck and several prominent public figures make the full name immediately recognizable. Families choosing it to honor a relative can distinguish that personal story from whichever contemporary association another person first brings to mind.
