Donna

Donna is the Italian word for a woman or lady, adopted as a given name in English-speaking communities. Its meaning is direct, unlike many names that preserve a word no longer used in everyday language. In the United States, it has a particularly strong mid-twentieth-century association, reinforced by actor Donna Reed and the television series bearing her name.

Other well-known bearers include singer Donna Summer and novelist Donna Tartt, giving the name cultural connections that extend beyond one era or occupation. Donna is a complete name rather than necessarily a shortening of a longer form. Its compact two-syllable sound and clear Italian word origin make it especially easy to understand as both an inherited family name and a standalone choice.
