Douglas

Douglas comes from a Scottish place and surname tradition associated with Gaelic elements for dark or black water. The name’s landscape meaning is distinct from later associations with the Douglas family in Scottish history. It became an established given name as well as a surname, carrying that geographical background into personal naming.

Doug and Dougie are familiar shortenings. Actor Douglas Fairbanks provides a recognizable historical bearer, while the full name offers a different rhythm from the one-syllable Doug. Families continuing Douglas from an older generation may appreciate that its story reaches beyond recent fashions to a specific water-related meaning and a longstanding Scottish name tradition.
