Ebenezer

Ebenezer comes from a Hebrew expression meaning “stone of help.” In the biblical account, Samuel sets up a stone after a victory and names it to acknowledge divine help. The name therefore begins as a memorial designation rather than as the personal name of that biblical figure, and it later entered English given-name use through religious naming traditions.

Its most familiar literary bearer is Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. The character’s story moves from isolation and miserliness toward generosity, giving the association more complexity than its opening scenes suggest. Eben is a useful short form for parents who value the full name’s history but want an everyday option. The biblical memorial and Dickens’s fictional character provide two distinct stories behind this substantial name.
