Ebony

Ebony is an English word name drawn from a dark, dense wood. The word traveled through ancient languages and ultimately has an Egyptian source. It also became a color word for a deep black, so the name carries both a natural material and a visual image within its meaning.

In the United States, Ebony has a particular association with African American naming and cultural expression. The magazine Ebony is one familiar cultural reference, while the wood itself has a musical connection through its traditional use for piano keys. Eboni is an established spelling alternative. These different strands give the name more than a purely botanical story: it can connect with nature, music, or Black cultural heritage, depending on the family choosing it and the associations they wish to pass on.
