Effie

Effie is an affectionate form of Euphemia, a Greek name built from elements connected with good or auspicious speech. Its meaning is often expressed as well-spoken or pleasant speech. The short form has a long life of its own, giving a compact everyday appearance to a much longer traditional name.

Modern readers may recognize Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games, while the name’s older use gives it a vintage family-name feel independent of that character. Effy is a related spelling, and Euphemia remains the clear longer form for anyone who wants one. Effie can equally be the complete name, preserving the historical nickname while leaving the Greek meaning available as part of its story.
