Eila

Eila has an established Finnish history as well as a separate Hebrew use associated with a tree name. The Finnish name’s derivation is uncertain: connections with Aila and the Elin family have been proposed. Those possibilities should not be merged with the Hebrew explanation into one universal meaning.

In Finland, Eila appeared in Väinö Kataja’s 1907 novel Tuskaa and became familiar during the early twentieth century. That literary history gives it a more specific background than simply describing it as an alternative to Isla or Ella. Families may encounter similar spellings in several languages, so the intended pronunciation and family tradition are especially helpful in explaining this compact name.
