Elan

Elan can be understood through two distinct language connections. As a form of the Hebrew name Ilan, it means “tree,” making it part of a well-established group of nature names. The French word élan instead refers to a rush, spirited energy, or vigor. Families may choose the same spelling for either reason, and the pronunciation can differ with the intended language.

The Hebrew connection links Elan with Ilana and Ilanit, feminine names formed from the same tree word. The French association is more like choosing an expressive vocabulary word as a name. Deciding which background matters to your family gives Elan a clearer story than combining all of its possible associations into one translation. Its four letters can hold either a botanical meaning or a French word’s lively sense of movement.
