Elara

Elara is a name from Greek mythology, borne by the mother of the giant Tityos. Its ancient meaning is uncertain; a connection with a Greek word associated with hazelnuts or spear shafts is only a proposal. The mythological identity is more secure than presenting either suggested object as a definitive translation.

One of Jupiter’s moons is named Elara, giving the name a separate, documented astronomical association. Elle and Lara offer possible shortenings without changing the full name’s history. Families interested in celestial names may value that moon connection, while those drawn to mythology can keep the original story in view. Similar names such as Elora have their own possible backgrounds.
