Eloisa

Eloisa is an Italian form related to Eloise and French Héloïse; Spanish usually writes it Eloísa. The older name is probably connected with Germanic elements meaning healthy or whole and wide. Its history is not the same as Louise, and a resemblance to the Greek word for sun does not establish a solar meaning.

Héloïse, the medieval French scholar and abbess, gives the wider name family a substantial intellectual history. Writer Eloisa James provides a modern literary association with this spelling. The final a gives Eloisa a different rhythm from English Eloise, and the accent in Eloísa helps indicate the Spanish vowel pattern. These are established language forms of a shared name family.
