Elyse

Elyse is a spelling variation of Elise, a short form in the Elizabeth family. Elizabeth ultimately comes from a Hebrew name commonly interpreted as “my God is an oath.” The meaning concerns that older name rather than anything supplied independently by the y in Elyse.

The spelling preserves Elise's familiar two-syllable sound while giving it a different appearance. Elle is an available short form, although Elyse is already concise enough to use in full. Elyse Keaton in Family Ties provides a recognizable television association. Parents comparing Elyse and Elise can focus on their preferred written form; the similar-looking Elysia has a different history and should not automatically supply an alternative meaning.
