Emelie

Emelie is a Swedish member of the Emily family, descending from the Roman name Aemilius. The traditional explanation connects that family name with Latin aemulus, meaning a rival or someone who strives to match another. Emelie shares this history with Emilia and Emilie, even though their endings and spellings have developed differently.

The name's Scandinavian setting is an important part of its identity. Emelie can reflect Swedish family usage while still being recognizable to English speakers familiar with Emily. Milly is an established short form in this family, and Emil provides a masculine counterpart through the same Roman root. The similar-looking Amelia has a different linguistic ancestry, so the choice between Emelie and Amelia can matter to families who want to preserve a specific name connection.
