Emmeline

Emmeline comes through an Old French diminutive of Germanic names beginning with the element amal. That element is traditionally associated with work or vigor. The name is genuinely old, but its resemblance to Emma and Emily should not be taken to mean that all three have the same root.

Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst provides a prominent historical bearer. Emmy and Em are approachable short forms, while Emeline and Emmaline are related spellings. English speakers use more than one ending pronunciation, including forms rhyming with keen or line. Parents may want to decide that sound explicitly, particularly if honoring someone whose pronunciation differs from the one most familiar in their own community.
