Emmerich

Emmerich is a German name with older Germanic roots. Its ending is connected with rulership, but its opening element has more than one proposed explanation. Scholars have associated it with elements for greatness, vigor or home, and several older names may have converged in the later form. A single confident translation hides that uncertainty.

The name belongs to a large family that includes French Émeric, Hungarian Imre and English Emery. Those forms illustrate how much a name can change as it moves between languages. Emmerich retains the fuller German spelling, which may be especially useful when preserving a family name that would otherwise appear quite different in translation.
