Eryx

Eryx is an ancient name associated with Sicily and Greek mythology. It belongs to a legendary king whose story is connected with the Sicilian place called Eryx, now Erice. A derivation from a Greek verb meaning to restrain has been suggested, but the name’s original meaning is uncertain. Its strongest established connection is geographical and mythological.

Ancient accounts describe Eryx challenging Heracles to a wrestling or boxing contest and being defeated. They differ about his parentage, a reminder that Greek myths often survive in several versions. The compact spelling has a striking final x, but its resemblance to Eric does not establish a shared origin. For parents drawn to mythology, Eryx offers a specific ancient story with a less immediately familiar written form.
