Esra

Esra has two distinct name histories. In Turkish use, it is a feminine name connected with Arabic Isra, meaning night journey. That expression has a particular place in Islamic tradition through the account of the Prophet Muhammad's journey by night. Esra therefore offers more than a general association with travel: it can carry a recognizable religious and cultural reference.

In another tradition, Esra is a spelling of the Hebrew masculine name Ezra, meaning help. Ezra is the biblical priest and scribe associated with teaching the law to the community after the exile. These are separate routes to the same written form, so the meaning and usage depend on the family tradition involved rather than on the letters alone.
