Essence

Essence is an English word name referring to the defining nature or fundamental character of a person or thing. The word ultimately comes from Latin essentia, connected with being or existence. That history is more accurate than describing it simply as Greek. As a name, Essence can express the idea of what makes someone uniquely themselves.

The word also appears in contexts involving concentrated fragrance, so different listeners may bring different associations. Its two syllables give it a compact sound despite the longer spelling. Essie offers an affectionate nickname with a more traditional feel. Parents drawn to meaningful word names such as Grace or Journey may appreciate Essence's abstract quality, while considering whether they enjoy explaining the personal idea behind their choice.
