Esteban

Esteban is the Spanish form of Stephen, from a Greek name meaning “crown” or “wreath.” In its ancient setting, a wreath could mark honor or victory; the name does not specifically mean a hereditary king. Its connection with Saint Stephen also gives it a long place in Christian naming traditions.

Stephen and Steven are English relatives, even though the extra opening vowel makes Esteban look quite different on the page. Families honoring a Stephen can therefore use Esteban while keeping the underlying name and meaning. Its three-syllable rhythm gives it more length than its English counterparts, which may be useful when balancing a short surname or middle name.
