Evander

Evander is the Latinized form of a Greek name commonly interpreted as “good man.” In classical legend, Evander is an Arcadian figure connected with the settlement of the future site of Rome and appears in Virgil’s Aeneid. A separate Scottish use has been linked with a name interpreted as “bow warrior,” so the two histories should be distinguished.

Boxer Evander Holyfield provides a recognizable modern bearer. Evan is an available shortening, although the independent Welsh name Evan has another origin. Parents considering Evander can choose it for its classical story or a family tradition without assuming that every similar-sounding name, including Alexander, has the same meaning.
