Evangelia

Evangelia is a Greek feminine name in the same family as Evangelos. Its roots join eu, meaning good, with angelos, a messenger; together they express the bringing of good news. The same Greek vocabulary lies behind words connected with the Gospel, giving Evangelia a clear Christian association as well as a hopeful everyday meaning.

The full name has a distinctly Greek form, while Evangelina and Evangeline show how the family developed in other languages. Evi is an established Greek short form, useful for someone who wants a brief everyday name alongside the longer formal one. Evangelia can also provide a family connection to an Evangelos without repeating his name exactly. Its good-news meaning comes from the whole word, rather than from separate meanings assigned to each modern syllable.
