Evans

Evans is a Welsh patronymic surname, meaning the son or descendant of Evan. Evan is a Welsh form in the John name family, whose older Hebrew root is traditionally translated as God is gracious. The final s belongs to the surname’s expression of relationship, rather than adding a new meaning to the personal name Evan.

As a first name, Evans carries that family-name structure into a different position. It can be chosen to preserve a maternal surname, honor an ancestor, or reflect a Welsh family connection. The surname is familiar through many public figures, but a particular family line is often more relevant than any famous bearer. Evans and Evan share a historical root while remaining distinct names with different immediate histories.
