Ewen

Ewen is an Anglicized spelling of Scottish Gaelic Eòghann. The deeper history is connected with Irish Eoghan, for which a yew-related explanation and a link with Latin Eugenius have both been proposed. Ewen consequently has a clear Scottish naming background even though the earliest meaning of the family remains uncertain.

Ewan and Euan are close alternatives, each giving a different written form to the same Scottish tradition. Ewen also has a literary association through D. K. Broster's historical novel The Flight of the Heron, which includes a central character with this name. That connection provides an additional route for families interested in Scottish settings and fiction. Its four-letter form keeps the name compact while preserving a spelling that has a history of its own.
