Federico

Federico is the Italian and Spanish form of Frederick, a Germanic name combining elements for peace and rulership. The usual interpretation is “peaceful ruler.” Its four-syllable rhythm opens up the more compact English form, while retaining the same historical name family. Fede and Fredo are possible short forms that preserve different parts of the full name.

Federico has particularly rich artistic associations. Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini and Spanish poet Federico García Lorca each give it a recognizable place in twentieth-century culture. Those connections belong to the exact form, making it more than an alternative spelling of Frederick. For families moving between English, Italian, or Spanish, the relationship among the forms can provide a useful bridge while allowing Federico to keep its own sound and character.
