Filip

Filip is a form of Philip used across much of Europe. The name began with Greek Philippos, combining elements for loving and horse, which gives the traditional meaning “lover of horses.” The f spelling represents the sound written ph in the familiar English form and reflects the spelling systems of several European languages.

Swedish, Polish, and Croatian are among the languages in which Filip is established, though it is not confined to those three. Its wider family includes forms such as French Philippe and Italian Filippo. That international history can be useful for a family preserving a particular heritage or honoring a Philip through another language. The meaning points specifically to horses, while the name itself has developed a much broader historical identity through centuries of personal use.
