Frida

Frida has two related-looking but distinct northern European explanations. In the German tradition it connects with the name element for peace, often through longer names containing that element. A Scandinavian route connects it with Old Norse fríðr, meaning beautiful or beloved. The shared modern spelling should not erase that distinction.

Mexican painter Frida Kahlo gives the name one of its strongest international artistic associations. Her fame does not make the underlying name Spanish in origin, although it is used in Spanish-speaking families. Frieda and Freida are useful spelling comparisons for the peace-related form. The family’s heritage or the person being honored can clarify which linguistic or artistic connection matters most.
