Gala

Gala has more than one established name history. In Russian use it can be a short form of Galina, which comes from Greek vocabulary for calmness. In Spanish it is associated with Galla, the feminine form of the Roman name Gallus, interpreted as a person from Gaul; Latin gallus also means “rooster.” The intended family tradition determines which background is relevant.

The name has an artistic association through Gala, the partner and muse of Salvador Dalí, who was born Elena Diakonova. English speakers may also hear the familiar word for a festive event, though that everyday association is separate from the personal-name derivations. Gala can therefore carry a Russian family connection, a classical Spanish route, or an artistic reference, each with its own story behind the same four letters.
