Gerardo

Gerardo is a Spanish and Italian form of Gerard, a name with Germanic elements referring to a spear and strength or bravery. The martial imagery belongs to the older name construction; it is not a description of how someone called Gerardo will behave. Gerard is the most direct form to compare when tracing the family of names.

Rapper and singer Gerardo Mejía is a recognizable bearer in popular music. The final o distinguishes Gerardo from Gerard while retaining the same underlying origin. The name can therefore connect generations or language traditions without copying a relative's spelling exactly. It should also be distinguished from Gerald, a related-looking Germanic name whose second element has a different explanation.
