German

German can represent Spanish Germán, a form of Latin Germanus, traditionally associated with a brother. The accent in Germán marks the final syllable as stressed. This name is not simply the English nationality word used as a first name, and its Spanish pronunciation differs substantially from the English word German.

Russian German also belongs to the Germanus tradition, though it can sometimes be connected with the separate name Herman, whose Germanic roots concern an army and a man. That second route explains why conflicting meanings appear in name lists. Germain and Germano are useful relatives of the Latin form. The language and original spelling help determine which history a family intends.
