Giuseppe

Giuseppe is the Italian form of Joseph, a Hebrew name associated with adding or increase. Its meaning is often expressed as a hope that God will add. The Italian form has developed its own familiar sound and spellings, while remaining part of the same older biblical name family as English Joseph.

Composer Giuseppe Verdi and the historical figure Giuseppe Garibaldi are notable bearers. Beppe is a traditional shorter form, offering an everyday option quite different from English Joe. A family honoring a Joseph can use Giuseppe to preserve an Italian-language connection at the same time. The full name and nickname are both established forms, rather than newly invented adaptations.
