Gonzalo

Gonzalo is a Spanish name descended from the medieval Gundisalvus, a Latinized form of a Germanic name. The first element is associated with war, but the second has several proposed explanations. The familiar translation “saved from combat” is therefore better treated as one interpretation than as a certain literal meaning.

The name has a long Spanish history, including an eleventh-century bishop of Mondoñedo named Gonzalo. Gonçalo is the Portuguese form, and Gonzo is a familiar shortening. Surnames such as González also belong to this name tradition. Those connections make Gonzalo an established personal name with a broad family history, even where the earliest compound cannot be translated with complete confidence.
