Greta

Greta developed as a short form of names in the Margaret family, including German Margarethe and Scandinavian Margareta. The older root is the Greek word for a pearl. Greta has long been used independently, so it does not need a longer name on official documents to carry that established connection.

Its two syllables and consonant-rich opening give Greta a different sound from the softer Maggie or Maisie, which share the broader name family. Gretel is another related short form with its own literary associations. Parents honoring a Margaret can choose Greta for a compact alternative, while keeping in mind that particular cultural namesakes are associations rather than the source of its meaning.
