Gunther

Gunther descends from the old Germanic name Gundahar. Its two elements refer to war and an army, giving it a clearly martial linguistic background. Gunnar is a Scandinavian relative formed from the same inherited elements. German spellings include Gunther, Gunter, Günther, and Günter, with differences that can affect pronunciation as well as appearance.

The name has a major place in the medieval German epic the Nibelungenlied. Its Gunther is a Burgundian king whose story involves Brunhild, Siegfried, and his sister Kriemhild. Those complex legends provide a literary association rather than a model of simple heroism. An eleventh-century saint also bore the name, adding a separate religious strand. For families exploring German names, Gunther offers an old compound whose history reaches through both literature and personal naming traditions.
