Halle

Halle has more than one possible naming history. In Scandinavian use, it can occur as a familiar form connected with longer names, while modern English-speaking families may know it chiefly through actress Halle Berry. A meaning from one proposed longer form should not automatically be assigned to every child named Halle.

Hallie is a spelling worth comparing if you want the familiar English two-syllable sound more visibly indicated. Halle can also prompt a different reading from people who recognize it as a place name, so introducing it aloud may be helpful. A family’s specific namesake or language tradition provides a clearer explanation than the unqualified translation “Thor’s stone.”
