Heather

Heather is an English botanical name taken directly from the flowering shrub. It brings an association with open moorland, especially the landscapes often pictured in Scotland, rather than a hidden personal-name translation. The plant connection is the central meaning; “small shrub” is a description of the plant rather than the most useful definition of the name.

The film Heathers provides a recognizable cultural reference, reflecting the name’s established presence in twentieth-century English-speaking life. Heather has two syllables and works without a nickname. Families comparing botanical names may place it beside other plant choices while deciding whether they prefer a landscape shrub, a garden flower, or a tree as the central association.
