Heloise

Heloise represents French Héloïse without its accents. It is generally traced to the Germanic name Helewidis, combining elements interpreted as healthy or whole and wide. That derivation is probable rather than certain, and the name’s resemblance to Louise or the Greek word for sun does not establish either as its origin.

The medieval scholar and abbess Héloïse gives the name a strong intellectual and historical connection. Her relationship and correspondence with Peter Abelard made her an enduring figure in European literary history, but she was also a learned woman in her own right. Heloise retains that recognizable form in an unaccented spelling, while Eloise belongs to the same name family. Its history offers a substantial reason to choose it beyond its sound alone.
