Hensley

Hensley is an English surname connected with a place in Devon. The place name combines the Old English personal name Heahmund with leah, a word for woodland or a clearing. Its original purpose was to identify a location and then people associated with that location, and that geographical link remains visible beneath its use as a modern given name.

That surname history makes Hensley part of the broader movement of place surnames into first-name use. The final ley is shared with many English landscape names, but the first element here has a specific older personal-name connection. Henslee is a related surname spelling. For a family using Hensley today, an ancestral surname or a link to Devon may be more meaningful than translating the complete older compound into a new phrase.
